Outdoor Learning

Decades of research – and the experiences of Craftsbury educators – indicate that health and well-being are directly correlated with time spent in nature. Students who spend time learning outdoors exhibit:

  • Improved focus and behavior
  • Stronger academic connections
  • Increased confidence and resiliency

It’s a powerful testament to the value of outdoor education. Check out the ways we are responding through Fall Expedition and WOW.

Fall Expedition
Student at Keewaydin

To launch their outdoor learning odyssey each school year, the entire middle school class embarks on Fall Expedition, a weeklong, environmentally focused trip. Whether at Nature’s Classroom in Maine or Keewaydin Environmental Education Center on Lake Dunmore in Vermont, the focus is on investigative learning and community building. Studies incorporate science, math, social studies, and language arts, and students experience first-hand the interdependency critical to building strong, resilient communities. They return ready to dive into learning—with stronger connections to each other and higher levels of classroom engagement.

WOW - Without Walls Wednesdays Each Wednesday, we ditch the desks for a half or full day and head out to experience the beauty and wonder of Vermont. Past experiences include paddling the Black River, rock climbing, mountain biking at Craftsbury Outdoor Center, skiing and snowboarding at Jay Peak, exploring the science of wind energy at the Lowell Mountain range, and caring for the environment through Green Up Day.
